The Oscars just recently introduced a new rule that will require Academy voters to actually WATCH all films nominated in a category before voting on the winner.
Wow.
This change was big news to people online, because WE ALL ASSUMED THAT’S JUST WHAT YOU HAD TO DO!!? Critics say they’re worried that past Oscar decisions may have been based more on reputation or “vibes” than actual viewing. VIBES??
And there has been concerns for a while that some voters just skipped watching certain films alltogether, especially in smaller or international categories.
In addition to this ‘it’s about time’ new rule, the Academy also clarified that using AI in films won’t help or hurt a movie’s chance of getting nominated. These changes are part of the Academy’s push to modernize and follow similar reforms made by BAFTA.
