Turns out, these weird times between Canada and the US are having an effect….on the number of Canadians crossing into the US by land.
In February, almost half a million fewer Canadians drove into the U.S. compared to the same time last year. The drop in land crossings, now at post-pandemic levels, is a glaring sign that President Trump’s trade tantrums have taken their toll on cross-border relations.
From “51st state” jokes to tariffs, Canadians are choosing to stay home rather than deal with the US’s hostility. According to locals, even Costco and Trader Joe’s parking lots are emptier! Looks like Canadians are voting with their wallets and choosing not to cross the border for a bargain.
Duty-free stores along the border are also seeing sales plummet, down 80% from pre-2020 levels. The drop is being compared to COVID pandemic-era disruptions, and store owners are worried the situation could get even worse if this keeps up.
Canadians are being urged to skip the U.S. and explore their own country. If Trump keeps his tariffs up, it might be the best summer vacation advice—buy local, and stay local!
