Remember all of that panic in 1999 about the total and irrevocable collapse of all society that was for sure about to happen when the clocks struck midnight on December 31st? The whole issue was computer code. At the time computers needed code to be as optimized and “small” as possible, which meant the first two numbers of the calendar year were dropped. So 1997 was just 97, 1998 was just 98, 1999 was just 99…

But then what happens when that number switches back down to 00?! As it turns out, not a whole lot. It was a hell of a party, but the world was still there in the morning.

The latest from A24 switches the script and imagines the what if scenario where technology suddenly and violently turned on us with the dawn of the new millennium. Writer/Director Kyle Mooney might be most recognizable as the weird guy from Saturday Night Live. He also seems to be cameoing in the film as well. As for the cast, you’ve got Rachel Zegler (Shazam 2, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), Jaeden Martell (Metal Lords, IT), Julian Dennison (Godzilla vs Kong, Hunt for The Wilderpeople) and Alicia Silverstone (as if she needs film title context). It’s violent and chaotic and fun. Most of us just had a family member flicking the light switch behind everyone in the room.
